CONSIDERATION OF ACCEPTANCE OF A DONATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $10,000 FROM ANTIOCH COMMUNITY CHURCH TO BE USED BY THE SOCIAL AND VOLUNTARY SERVICES COMMISSION TO FURTHER THE MISSION OF CHANGING LIVES AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE; AND BUDGET APPROPRIATION

BACKGROUND: The City Code, Section 8-111, requires that any donation made to the City with a value greater than $250 must be accepted by action of the City Council.
DISCUSSION: On December 20, 2018, the City Treasury received an unsolicited donation of $10,000 from Antioch Community Church - Norman. As discussed in the letter that accompanied the donation (see Attachment), the donation is intended to “recognize and support those…. who have dedicated their time and their lives to making a difference for the less fortunate and those often overlooked”.
The City of Norman, through its Social and Voluntary Services Commission (SVSC), provides support to several non-profit community agencies that provide services to the constituencies targeted by this generous donation. It is recommended that the Council accept the donation and direct the SVSC, through its granting process, to provide these funds to supplement the programs of one or more of the agencies that have received funding during fiscal year 2018-2019, through a contract amendment to be considered by Council separately.
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the Council accept the donation of $10,000 from Antioch Community Church - Norman and deposit the funds to the General Fund, Organizational Contributions (account 010-0000-365.13-73).
It is further recommended that the Council approve an appropriation of the donated funds to the Social and Voluntary Services Commission, Organizational Contributions (account 010-1087-411.47-41) and direct the Commission to grant the funds to an approved SVSC agency or agencies to further the missions discussed in the donation.
