Background: The purchase of this generator is to provide power in the event of a power outage for Fire Station #1. The generator currently at Station 1 is very old (1974) and unreliable. The current generator has been requiring continual maintenance to keep running and is not dependable. The current unit does not power all of the needed equipment when power is lost.
Discussion: Having a dependable generator at Fire Station 1 is critical so that in a time where the Station is without power, the generator can keep that Station in service and allow the firefighters to respond to emergency calls, serving the public in an uninterrupted manner. Our Shift Commanders are also located at Station 1 and need to be able to communicate effectively with fire companies throughout the City at all times.
Written quotes were obtained from three vendors in the amounts of $26,150, $44,011 and $68,158. After a thorough review it was determined that the lowest quote of $26,150, which was submitted by Faith Electric, was the lowest and best quote submitted and should be accepted.
Recommendation: It is recommended that City Council approve the purchase of a generator for Fire Station 1 in the amount of $26,150 from Faith Electric. Funds for this purchase were included in the fiscal year 2018-2019 capital outlay budget, paid through a Capital Fund transfer to the General Fund, Fire Suppression, Light Duty Equipment (account number 010-6443-422.50-09).
