Title

RESOLUTION R-1718-120: A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORMAN, OKLAHOMA, EXPRESSING A COMMITMENT TO ENDEAVOR TO TRANSITION THE CITY TO 100 PERCENT (100%) RENEWABLE ENERGY AND COMMITTING TO APPOINT A SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL ADVISORY BOARD TO DEVELOP AN OUTLINE FOR THE TRANSITION PROCESS.

Body

BACKGROUND:  Ready for 100 is a campaign of the Sierra Club with the purpose of encouraging cities to commit to endeavoring to transition to 100% clean, renewable energy. Local members have been working with City officials to work towards moving the City of Norman to 100% clean renewable energy sources by 2035. Simultaneous to these efforts, the Environmental Control Advisory Board (ECAB) has been working to update the City on its progress towards goals it set in 2009 to help the City reduce emissions. One of the recommendations of ECAB is to increase the access and use of renewable energy, while making energy efficiency a priority to move the community towards a 100% renewable future.

DISCUSSION: Representatives of the Ready for 100 campaign presented the campaign recommendations to the Community Planning and Transportation Committee on March 8, 2018. Campaign representatives have since been working more closely with ECAB to further develop the goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2035 and have submitted Resolution No. R-1718-120 for Council consideration.   Following the adoption of this resolution, ECAB will move forward with appointing a sub-committee which will be tasked with developing an outline for the transition process to 100% renewable energy. The resolution also affirms the City’s commitment to the goal of 100% renewable energy sources within the electricity sector by 2035 and other energy sectors by 2050.

RECOMMENDATION:  Staff is forwarding Resolution R-1718-120 to Council for consideration.
