BACKGROUND: Over the past several years citizens and visitors at the Animal Welfare Center have made donations to help care for the animals and for operations of the center. Any minimal cash donations which did not require City Council action have been receipted into a donation account.

Phase I of the expansion and renovation project is currently underway at the Animal Welfare Center. On the south side of the adoption section of the building there will be indoor/outdoor kennels for some of the larger dogs. There is a trench drain on the inside of the building to aid with cleaning and to help with disease control. The plans were developed without a trench drain on the outside kennel area. After researching the issue and discussing it with the architect, it was felt installation of this trench drain will provide the most efficient cleaning and disease control for the new building. Tthe contractor was asked for an estimate to install a trench drain in the outside kennel area.

This item seeks an appropriation of funds to move forward with adding the outside trench drain to the project.

DISCUSSION: Working with Cooley Construction a net price of $15,974 was negotiated to add the trench drain into the overall construction project. In accordance with City Council's change order policy, the change order for this project addition will be sent to the City Manager for review and approval and reported to Council at a subsequent meeting.
