BACKGROUND: The Norman Police Department was recently contacted by Mr. Gary Guidice, the President and Founder of Blue Heron Communications, a local marketing business. Mr. Guidice contacted the Norman Police Department on behalf of Brownells Incorporated, a nationally recognized distributor of firearms related equipment. Through Mr. Guidice, Brownell's has offered to donate equipment valued at approximately $19,000 to the Norman Police Department to improve firearms range capabilities.
DISCUSSION: The Lt. Royce O. Weddle Norman Police Firing Range was built in the 1960's and is in desperate need of repairs. Research and options concerning its renovation will be submitted through normal budgeting channels.
In the interim, Brownells has offered to donate needed target and firearms related equipment that will significantly improve the function of the range as it exists today. A list of specific items is included in this agenda item for review.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the donations of equipment totaling approximately $19,000 be accepted for the Lt. Royce O. Weddle Norman Police Firing Range.
