BACKGROUND: The Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security fiscal year 2015 Homeland Security Grant Program provides funds for the purchase of radiation detection equipment that will be placed on the Hazardous Materials Unit.

 

DISCUSSIONThe Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security received Grant #760.057 under the Homeland Security Grant Program for 2015 which provides for the purchase of this equipment.  The Norman Fire Department has been made a sub-grantee of Radiation Detection Equipment valued at $24,500 to be used on the Hazardous Materials unit. 

 

The City of Norman will assign the grant funds in the amount of $24,500 to the State of Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and the Office of Homeland Security to purchase the equipment, which will then be delivered and titled directly to the City of Norman.  The City will accept title to the equipment and acknowledge that it will be used according to the terms of the Grant.

 

This equipment will aid the Norman Fire Department respond to Hazardous Materials events enabling us to detect and identify the presence of radiation.

 

RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that City Council accept the award of the $24,500 in grant funds; assigns the grant funds to the State of Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and the Office of Homeland Security to purchase the equipment, which will then be delivered and titled directly to the City of Norman; and accepts this equipment for use on the Hazardous Materials Unit.
