BACKGROUND: Since the early 1990’s, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been working on the development of improvements for the Interstate 35 corridor in Norman. The process included public participation in the selection of the preferred alternatives for the reconfiguration of four interchanges (e.g., State Highway 9 East, Lindsey Street, Main Street and U.S. Highway 77). The U.S. Highway 77 interchange reconstruction was completed in 2010 and reconstruction of the Main Street interchange began on January 7, 2013. The Lindsey Street and State Highway 9 interchanges are in the final stages of design and are scheduled to be reconstructed from 2015 to 2017.

The Main Street interchange is being reconfigured from the full cloverleaf design of the 1950’s to a new Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI). The work includes the widening of Main Street, between Ed Noble Parkway and Interstate Drive, a new traffic signal at the intersection of the I-35 ramps, replacement of the traffic signal at Ed Noble Parkway and modification of the signal at Interstate Drive. City Council approval of a project agreement and payment of the local share of the project cost, if applicable, are typically the last pre-construction activities of a federally funded project.
