Title

CONSIDERATION OF ACCEPTANCE OF A DONATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $5,000 FROM ADT SECURITY SYSTEMS TO BE USED BY THE NORMAN FIRE DEPARTMENT AND BUDGET APPROPRIATION.

Body

BACKGROUND:  Section 8-111 of the City Code requires that the City Council accept all donations valued greater than $250 received by the City prior to the use or disbursement of same.  Therefore, it is requested that Council review and consider the following item for acceptance and use by the Norman Fire Department.

DISCUSSION:  On January 10, ADT honored the Norman Fire Department with one of its LifeSaver Awards for saving the life of Gene Mendicki who resides at 1417 Sebastiani Court in Norman.  Around 8:00 a.m. on Nov. 2, Mr. Mendicki experienced a potentially deadly fire in his home and credits his security system and City of Norman firefighters for saving his life and the lives of his three dogs who were inside.

When ADT hears of successful outcomes like this one, they celebrate with a LifeSaver Award presentation. They hold these events around the country every other week where they recognize ADT employees who played a part and they present $5,000 to the local fire department. Since 2011, they have awarded more than $400,000 to nearly 100 fire and police departments across the US and Canada.

At the Jan 10 event held at the Mendicki home, ADT presented a $5,000 check to the Norman Fire Department to recognize the brave men and women who entered the burning home. The purpose for these LifeSaver events is to shine a spotlight on first responders who risk their lives to save others.

The money will be deposited into the Fire Miscellaneous revenue account and used to facilitate the Norman Fire Department in the maintenance of their facilities.

RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that City Council accept the donation of $5,000 from the ADT Security Systems to be used to facilitate the Norman Fire Department in the maintenance of their facilities and the money be deposited into Revenue: Citizen Donations (account 010-0000-365.13-72) and appropriated to Maintenance & Repair Services/Buildings and Facilities (account 010-6443-422.42-10).
